From Yiddish נאַשן (nashn), from Middle High German naschen (“nibble”) (which is also the parent of German naschen), from Old High German naskōn (“to nibble; parasite”), from Proto-Germanic *hnaskōną (“to weaken; make soft; tenderise”). Related to nesh.
