From Yiddish נאַשן (nashn), from Middle High German naschen (nibble) (which is also the parent of German naschen), from Old High German naskōn (to nibble; parasite), from Proto-Germanic *hnaskōną (to weaken; make soft; tenderise). Related to nesh.
