Late 18th century: from New Latin noctula, from noctua (“small owl”, from nox, noctis, “night”, and whence also Italian nottua) + -ula (diminutive suffix), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *nókʷts (“night”). Cognate to English noctule and Venetian nòtoła.
