From Vulgar Latin *nūba, from Latin nūbes, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)newdʰ- (“to cover”). Compare Occitan niu, Portuguese nuve, Spanish nube.
Usage notes
Very rare outside of the expressions porter aux nues and tomber des nues; the more common literary term is now nuée while the common usage is nuage.
