From Old Portuguese paaço (“palace”), from Latin palātium (“palace”), from Palātium (“Palatine hill”), possibly from Etruscan 𐌚𐌀𐌋𐌀𐌃 (falad, “sky”). Cognate with Galician pazo and Spanish pazo. Doublet of palácio, a borrowing.
