pallissa

Catalan

Etymology

From Old Catalan palissa, which had the meaning of "fence" or "palisade", especially in the context of knightly jousting[1], from Old Occitan palissa (stake), from or related to pal, less likely from a Gallo-Romance Vulgar Latin *palicea, from Latin palus. The word probably later received phonetic influence from words like lliça, vall. It can also be analyzed as a Catalan derivative of pal (stake).
