parvi
Finnish
Etymology
From Proto-Finno-Ugric *parwɜ or *parɜ-wɜ. Cognates include with Estonian parv (“flock, group; raft”), Ingrian parvi (“flock, group; shelf, balcony”), Veps parveh and Khanty пөр (pôr, “flock, group; raft”). It is not certain if the "group" and "raft, loft, balcony" senses belong together, but the latter is thought to have developed through a stage of "group of logs joined together".
