From Proto-Indo-European *poyHnos, *peyHnos. Cognate with Latvian piẽns (“milk”), Sanskrit पयस् (páyas, “milk”), Persian پینو (pīnū, “butter-milk”). Related to dialectal Žemaitian pýti (“to start to give milk”) (< Proto-Indo-European zero-grade *piH-).
