An alteration of Middle Irish potecaire (assimilated to the suffix -éir), from Old French apotecaire, from Medieval Latin apothēcārius (“storekeeper”), from Latin apothēca (“repository, storehouse, warehouse”), from Ancient Greek ἀποθήκη (apothḗkē, “a repository, storehouse”).
