Possibly from Gothic anapraggan (anapraggan, press). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *prAng-, *prAgn- (pole, stalk), cognate with Old Norse frakka (javelin, throwing spit), Old English franca (javelin, lance). Occurs almost exclusively in the plural form.
