Noun
professeur m (plural professeurs)
Usage notes
- The word is often used for a female teacher as well, retaining masculine agreement or in such forms of address as Madame le Professeur (with feminine agreement). Although the etymologically expected feminine form would be professrice, based on Latin profestrix (compare with successrice), the feminine forms professeure and professoresse (compare with doctoresse) are sometimes used, while the Académie française recommended that professeuse be universally avoided (compare with coiffeuse). With apocope, la prof is quite frequent.
