Singularized plural, from Proto-Albanian *kara, from Proto-Indo-European *keres- (“rough hair, bristle”), ultimately from *sker- (“to cut”). Compare Middle Irish carrach (“scurfy, mangy”), Lithuanian šerys (“bristle, animal hair”), Russian шерсть (šerst’, “wool”), Old English her, hǣr 'hair'.
