From Old Portuguese, from Vulgar Latin *quaresima, from Latin quadrāgēsima (“the fortieth part; Lent”), substantive of quadrāgēsimus (“fortieth”). Cognate of quadragésima (“fortieth”). Compare Spanish Cuaresma. Doublet of quadragésima, which was a borrowing.
