Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *k-riɛs (PPC *k-riɛs/k-rɛs, PMV *res), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ris ~ *riəs ~ *rəs ~ *rʔiəs (“root”); cognate with North Central Vietnamese rện, Semai re'is, Bahnar rơh, Koho rias, Pacoh reaih, Khmer ឫស (rɨh), Mon ရိုဟ် (rɜ̀h) and Car Nicobarese ṛĕh. Cognates outside Mon-Khmer include Proto-Munda *rEˀt.
