1. rarity (something rare, rarely seen, found, observed)

   bibliogrāfisks retums ― bibliographic rarity

   redzēju tādu retumu, kā melno stārķi ― I saw such a rarity as the black stork

   dabas retums ― a rarity of nature, something abnormal, not typical

2. rarity, thinness (the quality of that which is rare, thin)

   gaišie mati... kur pakausī tas retums, tas tik mākslīgi pārsegts un nosukāts, ka nemaz nav manāms. ― blond hair... where on the back of (his) head it was rare, it (= hair) was so artfully brushed and covered that it was not noticeable
