rosmaninho
Portuguese
Etymology
From Old Portuguese [Term?], from an alteration of Latin rosmarīnus (“rosemary”). Compare Catalan romaní.
Pronunciation
Noun
rosmaninho m (plural rosmaninhos)
- (botany) Spanish lavender (Lavandula stoechas)
- (botany, nonstandard, colloquial) rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
- Synonym: alecrim
Usage notes
Even though rosmaninho is derived from rosmarīnus (“rosemary”) it designates an entirely different genus of plants. In colloquial usage it is therefore sometimes confused with rosemary, which is alecrim in Portuguese.
