From Proto-Finnic *cüvä (compare Finnish syvä), possibly from Proto-Finno-Ugric *tiwä (compare e.g. Livonian tõvā, Northern Sami davvi (“north”), Eastern Mari тӱнӧ (tünö)) or from Proto-Germanic *deupaz (“deep”).
