Etymology

This word entered standard German alongside sabbeln from German Low German, Dutch Low Saxon. Subsequently, the meaning of this term shifted; sabbeln retains the original meaning, "dool". Compare southern Dutch zabberen, standard Dutch sabbelen. The nouns Sabber and Sabbel are also closely related.
