Etymology

Past participle of scegliere, corresponding to a Vulgar Latin *exeltus < *exelctus < *exēlēctus, from Latin ex (out of, from) + ēlēctus (picked, chosen, elected). Compare Sicilian sceltu, scertu, Venetian sièlto, Friulian sielt; cf. also French élit.
