Past participle of scegliere, corresponding to a Vulgar Latin *exeltus < *exelctus < *exēlēctus, from Latin ex (“out of, from”) + ēlēctus (“picked, chosen, elected”). Compare Sicilian sceltu, scertu, Venetian sièlto, Friulian sielt; cf. also French élit.
