From Middle Dutch schedele, from Old Dutch skēthila, *skeithila (“part, crown, crest, summit”), from Proto-Germanic *skaidilō (“part in the hair, top, crown, crest, summit”), from Proto-Indo-European *skÁit- (“to cut, part, separate”). Cognate with German Scheitel (“part, crest, apex”).
