From Vulgar Latin *scrībānem (with later change of declension), accusative of Latin *scrība, from Latin scrība (“writer, scribe”), with altered declension. Compare Occitan escrivan, French écrivain, Spanish escribano. Doublet of scriba, a borrowing.
