Uncertain. Either from shpjertë[1], or continuing Proto-Indo-European *speh₁- (“to prosper, turn out well”). Compare Greek σπεύδω (spévdo, “to hasten, make haste”), σπέρχομαι (spérchomai, “to rush”), Dutch spoed (“haste; speed”), English speed.
