From Middle English sylveren, selverne, from Old English silfren, seolfren, seolfern (“silvern”), from Proto-Germanic *silubrīnaz (“made of silver”); equivalent to silver + -(e)n. Cognate with Dutch zilveren (“silvern”), German silbern (“silvern”).
