From Latin sinister, sinistrum, through a Vulgar Latin root *sinexter, sinextrum, from contamination with dexter (“right”), whence Spanish diestro[1]. Compare Portuguese sestro, Italian sinistro (archaic or Old Italian sinestro), Old French senestre.
