From Proto-Indo-European *pornóm (“wing, feather”). Cognate with English fern, Albanian fier (“fern”), Avestan 𐬀𐬥𐬆𐬭𐬀𐬞 (parəna, “feather”), Sanskrit पर्ण (parṇá, “feather”).
