From Middle English sprengen (“to sprinkle”), from Old English *sprencan, sprengan, sprencgan (“to cause to spring; scatter”), from Proto-Germanic *sprangijaną, causative of Proto-Germanic *springaną (“to spring”). Cognate with Dutch sprengen, German sprengen. Doublet of English springe.
