From Middle English sprengen (to sprinkle), from Old English *sprencan, sprengan, sprencgan (to cause to spring; scatter), from Proto-Germanic *sprangijaną, causative of Proto-Germanic *springaną (to spring). Cognate with Dutch sprengen, German sprengen. Doublet of English springe.
