From Middle High German ströuwen, Old High German strewen. Cognate with Old Saxon strewian, Old English streowian, Dutch strooien, English strew, Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌾𐌰𐌽 (straujan).[1] From Proto-Germanic *strawjaną.
