From Proto-Germanic *swanaz (“swan”), whence also Old English swan (English swan), Old Saxon swan (Low German Swaan), West Frisian swan, Dutch zwaan, and Old High German swan (German Schwan), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *swen- (“to sound, resound”); related to Latin sonare (to sound).
