Borrowed from Middle Low German terlink (“die, cube, literally small package”), from Middle Low German tēre (“package”) due to the cubic shape of things packaged for transport. Cognate with Low German terling (“die”), Danish/Norwegian terning (“die”), Faroese terningur (“die”).
