From Proto-Athabaskan *tł’əɣəš (“eel, snake”). Cognate with Ahtna tlʼaghes (“eel”), Tlingit tłʼikʼʷx (“worm, snake”), possibly cognate with Ket тиг, тих (tìɣ).
