themel

Albanian

Etymology

Unknown, could be an ancient substrate word; compare Sumerian 𒋼 "temen" and Akkadian 𒋼 "temennu" both meaning 'foundation' or Etruscan [script needed] (themiase) 'foundation' from [script needed] (them-) 'to make foundations, to build' [1]. If Indo-European, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm even though problematic. Compare Serbo-Croatian zemlja (earth, soil). Otherwise from Ancient Greek θεμέλιος (themélios).
