Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [tɔɾʊn]
- Hyphenation: to‧run
Etymology 1
According to Budagov, Pedersen, Ačaṙyan and Eren, borrowed from Armenian; compare Old Armenian թոռն (tʿoṙn, “grandchild”). See also dialectal tor (“young”), also from Armenian. But according to Starostin/Dubo/Mudrak, possibly borrowed from the Iranian cognates of Armenian թոռն (tʿoṙn), for which see Proto-Indo-European *ter-. Another possibility (Starostin/Dubo/Mudrak) also includes a native Turkic origin via West Old Turkic tor ("young, young animal"), from Proto-Turkic *tōr-um (“a kind of young animal”), possibly from Altaic *t`ṓrV ("young animal") which is sometimes confused with Proto-Indo-European *ter-, *tor- (“tender; young”).
