Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *torvi, from earlier *towri, borrowed from a Baltic language, compare Latvian taure (“bugle”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *táwros. In Baltic-Finnic a metathesis *wr > rw has occurred (compare järvi, karva). Cognates include Veps torv, Karelian torvi and Estonian tõri.
