Possibly from Middle Low German trecken, from Old Saxon *trekkian, from Proto-Germanic *trakjaną (to drag), causative of Proto-Germanic *trekaną (to push, draw, scratch), from Proto-Indo-European *dereg- (to pull). Cognate with Dutch trekken, Middle High German trecken, Old Frisian trekka (> West Frisian trekke).
