Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *ōtar, perhaps borrowed from a Iranian language; cf. Avestan 𐬁𐬙𐬀𐬭𐬱 (ātarš) ("fire") or more likely from Sarmato-Alanic. More at *ātr-, *ātar- (“fire”); it derives ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₁ter- (“fire”), whence also Latin āter (“black”). See also Romanian vatră and Serbo-Croatian vatra, which were probably borrowed from it.
