Etymology

Borrowed from Old Occitan velhar[1], [2] (compare also Old French veiller), from Latin vigilāre, present active infinitive of vigilō; replaced the original obsolete Italian form vegghiare, which was inherited [3]. Compare also the other doublet vigilare, a learned borrowing from Latin.
