From Proto-Albanian *uell-, from Proto-Indo-European *uel-(s-) 'to tear, seize upon'[1]. Cognate to Latin vello (to pluck, tug)[2], Latvian veli, Lithuanian vẽlės (the ghostly figures of the deceased), Gothic wilwan (wilwan, to rob) and Hittite [Term?] (/hullāi/, fight, struggle).
