From Middle Dutch vleck, vlecke (also vlacke), from Old Dutch flec (attested as a byname) and *flekko, from Proto-Germanic *flekka- (“spot, mark, blemish”), of uncertain origin. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂g-, *pleh₂k- (“to beat, strike”).
