From Middle Dutch wanneer, wan eer, from Old Dutch *wan ēr. The former part is found as Middle Dutch wan, from Old Dutch *wan, from Proto-Germanic *hwan. The latter part is identical with modern eer (“before”). Cognate with Low German wannehr, Luxembourgish wéini, obsolete German wannehe.
