From Proto-Germanic *wlitiz, *wlituz (“appearance, look, aspect”), from Proto-Indo-European *wel- (“to see”). Cognate with Old Frisian wlite, Old Saxon wliti, Old Norse litr, Gothic 𐍅𐌻𐌹𐍄𐍃 (wlits). Related to Old English wlītan (“to see, look”), wlātian (“to gaze, observe”).
