From Middle Dutch wrāke, wraeck, from Old Dutch wrāka, wrāca, from Proto-Germanic *wrēkō (“persecution, revenge”), from Proto-Indo-European *wreg- (“to drive, press, urge”). Cognate with English wrack and wreak (“vengenace, revenge”), German Rache (“revenge”). More at wreak.
