Etymology 1

From Ottoman Turkish يوزمك (yüzmek, to swim, float), from Proto-Turkic *jüŕ- (to swim, float). Altaicists compare to Japanese 濡れる (nureru, to get wet), Manchu ᠨᡝᡵᡝᠮᠪᡳ (nerembi, to swim (of animals)), Mongolian норох (noroh, to soak up, get wet) and reconstruct Proto-Altaic *ni̯úŕe ("to become wet, soak").[1]

Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰘𐰇𐰕 (yüz-, to swim), Karakhanid [script needed] (yüzmēk, to swim), Azerbaijani üzmək (to swim), Bashkir йөҙөү (yöðöw, to swim), Kazakh жүзу (jüzw, to swim), Kyrgyz жүзүү (cüzüü, to swim, float), Turkmen ýüzmek (to swim, float, sail), Uyghur ئۈزمەك (üzmek, to swim), Uzbek yuzmoq (to swim).
