Etymology

Compound of Zappen (“cone”) +‎ duster (“dark”). The first component points to Zapfenstreich (“curfew, last post”), but may also be based on Hebrew צפון‎ (“North”, and thence “midnight”). Both words have probably contributed, it being unknown which is original and which secondary.
