From Old Spanish sarza, itself from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia, possibly Basque [Term?]. Alternatively, from Arabic شِرْس (širs, “shrub with thorns”), from the root ش ر س (š-r-s) related to “harshness”, “wildness”, “ill-nature”.[1]
