From Middle Dutch sondach, sonnendach, from Old Dutch sunnadag (1151-1200; Reimbibel), from late Proto-Germanic *sunnōniz dagaz (“day of the sun”), a calque of Latin dies Solis. Compare Low German Sünndag, German Sonntag, West Frisian snein, English Sunday, Danish søndag.
