From Middle Dutch sintvloed. Originally equivalent to now obsolete zin or zene (“permanent, forever”) + vloed (“flood”), but folketymologically reinterpreted as the compound zonde (“sin”) + vloed (“flood”). Cognate to German Sintflut.
