From Proto-Germanic *tungǭ, from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s. Compare Old Saxon tunga, Old Dutch tunga, Old English tunge, Gothic 𐍄𐌿𐌲𐌲𐍉 (tuggō) and Old Norse tunga (Icelandic tunga (“tongue”)).
