From zwoord, a dialectal form of early modern Dutch zwaert, zweerd, from Middle Dutch swaerde (“hairy skin”), from Old Dutch *swarda, from Proto-Germanic *swardō (“overgrown surface”). Cognate with English sward, Icelandic svörður.
