House of Representatives votes in the election of 1824
This map illustrates the voting for candidates by state in the House of Representatives election of 1824. Adams, despite not winning the popular vote, won 54 percent of the House votes and was elected president in 1825.
J.Q. Adams captured 54% of the vote, winning Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, new York, Maryland, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Louisiana. Jackson captured 29% of the vote, winning New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. Crawford captured 17% of the vote, winning Delaware, Virginia (including present-day West Virginia), North Carolina, and Georgia.
