epididymitis
(noun)
An inflammation of the epididymis, a structure in the testicles where sperm matures.
Examples of epididymitis in the following topics:
-
Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU)
- Women are at risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), while in men the infection can progress to epididymitis and cause infertility.
-
Gonorrhea
- In both men and women if gonorrhea is left untreated, it may spread locally causing epididymitis or pelvic inflammatory disease or throughout the body, affecting joints and heart valves.Treatment is commonly with ceftriaxone as antibiotic resistance has developed to many previously used medications.
-
Chlamydia
- Occasionally, the condition spreads to the upper genital tract in women (causing pelvic inflammatory disease) or to the epididymis in men (causing epididymitis).
- If left untreated, it is possible for chlamydia in men to spread to the testicles causing epididymitis, which in rare cases can cause sterility if not treated within 6 to 8 weeks.
-
Testicular Cancer
- Not all lumps on the testicles are tumors, and not all tumors are malignant; there are many other conditions such as testicular microlithiasis, epididymal cysts, appendix testis (hydatid of Morgagni), and so on which may be painful but are non-cancerous.
