Control Technology Assessment. The Secondary Nonferrous Smelting Industry
October 1980
DHHS (NIOSH) Publication Number 80-143
Control technology for minimizing worker exposure to toxic chemicals and physical agents in the secondary nonferrous smelting industry (SIC-3339) was evaluated. Industry representatives were interviewed, 22 smelting facilities were visited and 6 were surveyed in-depth, and applicable literature was reviewed to determine exposure control used throughout the industry. In most of the smelters, no fully integrated control programs were utilized. The authors suggest that successful control of employee exposure requires an integrated control program that incorporates engineering controls, work practices, and use of personal protective equipment. They recommend further research and development programs in the area of improved control technology for this industry.
